I’m a journalist. A Canadian journalist, at that. So I live in a land where it’s dark by four p.m. and still dark at 8 the next morning.

You get used to it.

It rains a lot where I live. That you never get used to.

I love the rain, but it complicates things.

And I’m a mom.

So I worry.

It comes with the territory.

We’re dog people at my house so we’re often out in all kinds of weather.

Apparently, I’m not as young as I used to be so I’m beginning to understand how ageing vision affects safety.

I’ve seen several pedestrians struck down.

Each time, I’ve had the same thought:

It could just as easily have been me.

Both as a pedestrian or as a driver.
